Lipoproteins therefore contribute to the metabolism of lipids by serving as their transport vehicle. The structure of lipoproteins is generally composed of the following:

— Outer shell: Made up of a monolayer of phospholipids, free cholesterol, and one or more proteins called apolipoproteins. Apolipoproteins serve either as enzyme activators or as ligands that bind to receptors.

— Inner core: Made up of a collection of hydrophobic neutral lipids such as triacylglycerols and cholesterol esters.
